Dirty or clogged carburetors are the number one cause of problems of motorcycle performance issues. A dirty carburetor can cause rough idle, hesitation and loss of power. Worn O-ring seals can leak fuel past metering orifices causing rich running which leads to poor performance and economy.
Motorcycle carburetors can become clogged from the bike being stored with fuel in it. As fuel evaporates, it leaves behind a gummy residue that can clog the small orifices and passageways inside your motorcycle's carburetor. They can also become clogged from the use of low grade fuels and old age.
To restore proper operation of your motorcycles carburetors, cleaning and proper rebuilding is required.
The rebuilding of a motorcycle carburetor can often be overwelming for someone not experienced in doing so. This is why we offer a motorcycle carburetor cleaning and rebuilding service for those who are competent enough to remove their own carburetors but does not feel comfortable enough to rebuild them. Simply ship us your motorcycle carburetors for service and we will ship them back to you fully rebuilt and ready to install. |

This set of carburetors were out of a GL1500 that sat idle for 2 years. Note the varnish buildup on the outside of the carbs from evaporation of gasoline. This set was so gummed up the slides were stuck.

This buildup of varnish and rust was found inside a 20 year old Honda twin. It was running but not well.

This set of carburetors came out of a 1974 Honda CB 750 that sat idle for some 20 years. Note how much varnish is plugging up these carbs. in most cases rebuilding them when they get to this condition is very tricky as disassembly is very difficult and could lead to broken parts if care is not oxyuricide when rebuilding.

FAQ
My bike has been sitting idle for a few months. It ran when I parked it now it runs very poorly and is hard to start. Could it be my carburetors?
It very well could be. Any time fuel is left in a motor vehicle, it can evaporate leaving behind a gooey substance that closely resembles varnish. This stuff clogs the passageways inside your carburetors and keep them from drawing fuel into the engine properly.
How does one get this varnish out of the carburetors?
The carburetors will require disassembly and its internal metering components cleaned in a powerful solvent. In most cases, anything rubber inside the carburetors will need to be replaced as well since they will more than likely be dried out and brittle from the deteriorating effects of old gasoline
Do carburetors wear out?
Yes. There are certain parts inside of a carburetor that can wear out. The shaft for the butterfly valve could be worn, the slide can wear, needle jets can ear and the float valves can wear out over time. Worn pars can cause poor air or fuel metering which will lead to poor performance.
There is fuel leaking out of my carburetors. What could be wrong?
Old brittle gaskets or o rings can cause leakage. If the leakage is coming out of the over flow tubes then it could be a stuck float or a worn needle valve or dirt lodged in the valve. This condition is not safe to ride the motorcycle as it can cause a fire. Seek help from a professional technician before putting the motorcycle back in service.
My motorcycle runs poorly but only at certain throttle openings. Is this my carburetor(s) malfunctioning?
More than likely that would be the cause. Although other problems with the motorcycle can cause similar symptoms, most of the time if it is throttle opening dependent, it will be linked to the carburetors.
I took the air box off my motorcycle and installed pod filters. Now my bike runs bad. Are my carburetors bad?
Not likely. In most cases rec a lib rating the carburetors to feed the engine more fuel will cure the problem you just created. Any time more air is allowed to enter the carburetor, more fuel must be added for the engine to run properly. removal of your air box allows more air to enter into the engine than what your carburetor was originally designed to meter.
My RPMS stay high and the bike has problems idling properly, are my carburetors at fault?
Quite possible. Although there are other things like vacuum leaks that can cause similar symptoms, the carburetors are not to be overlooked. Lean fuel mixtures from clogged metering jets can cause this same symptom.
I was told my carburetors need rebuilding. What does that entail?
The carburetor needs to be dismantled, all plastic and rubber parts are removed from the carburetor so that it can be soaked in solvent to be cleaned. Carburetor cleaner in an aerosol can and compressed air are used to trace each passage to ensure they are not blocked. New o rings and gaskets are installed. A new float and float valve may also need to be installed if they are worn. Slides are checked to make sure they are not worn. the carburetor is reassembled with new parts and tested for leakage. If it passes a bench test, it is mounted to the motorcycle and final adjustments to the slow speed fuel mixture and idle speed are made. In the case of a multi carburetor machine, each carburetor will be synchronized so that each one is opening the same exact amount.
Why should I go through the trouble of rebuilding them. Shouldn't I just buy a new set?
In most cases, rebuilding is far more cost effective than purchasing new carburetors. A bank of 4 carburetors from the manufacture can easily cost $1000 or more.
What about buying a used set of carburetors?
In most cases used carburetors have been sitting around for some time. They will probably need to be cleaned out at minimum and it would still run you pretty close to what it would cost to just rebuild the ones you already have. You will also have the benefit of knowing that your carburetors are like new.
